The minutes of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning record that at the meeting of 1st February 1787, Robert Burns was made an Honorary member of the Lodge. The painting "The Inauguration of Robert Burns as Poet Laureate of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning" points to the ceremony taking place on 1st March 1787 but the minutes of that meeting do not support this.
