Gosford House was the Residence of The Honourable Francis Charteris (later Lord Elcho) who was Grand Master Mason of Scotland when Robert Burns visited Edinburgh in 1786. He proposed the Toast "To Caledonia, and Caledonia's Bard, Brother Burns!" on 12 January 1787 which Burns wrote to his friend John Ballantine. Francis Charteris is also seen in the painting attached, for more information see wwwcankil2.com.
