The minutes of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning record that at the meeting of 1st February 1787, Robert Burns was made an Honorary member of the Lodge. The painting "The Inauguration of Robert Burns as Poet Laureate of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning" depicts the event which was reputed to have taken place on 1st March 1787. Gosford House was the Residence of The Honourable Francis Charteris (later Lord Elcho) who was Grand Master Mason of Scotland when Robert Burns visited Edinburgh in 1786. He proposed the Toast "To Caledonia, and Caledonia's Bard, Brother Burns!" on 12 January 1787 which Burns wrote to his friend John Ballantine. Archibald Montgomerie, 11th Earl of Eglinton lived at Eglinton Castle. He subscribed for forty-two copies of the Edinburgh Edition of Robert Burns and is featured in the painting "The Inauguration of Robert Burns as Poet Laureate of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning 1st March 1787". Craigdarroch was the country seat of Alexander Fergusson, Laird of Craigdarroch. He and Robert Burns became friendly during Burns time in Edinburgh in 1786/7, a friendship which strengthened when Burns rented the Ellisland farm not far from Craigdarroch. Alexander Fergusson of Craigdarroch was Master of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning from 1784 to 1787 and is featured handing the laurel wreath to Robert Burns in the painting "The Inauguration of Robert Burns as Poet Laureate of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning 1st March 1787".
