Torphichen, West Lothian, site of the Preceptory of Torphichen. In Robert Burns' time, the Preceptory and surrounding lands were owned by Lord Torphichen who was Depute Grand Master and is featured in the painting "The Inauguration of Robert Burns as Poet Laureate of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning, 1st March 1787". The minutes of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning record that at the meeting of 1st February 1787, Robert Burns was made an Honorary member of the Lodge. The painting "The Inauguration of Robert Burns as Poet Laureate of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning" points to the ceremony taking place on 1st March 1787 but the minutes of that meeting do not support this. Robert Burns and his brother Gilbert took a lease on the Mossgiel farm in 1783. Robert Burns lived here until he departed for Edinburgh in December 1786. For more detail on Robert Burns see www.cankil2.com.
